Dec. 14 (UPI) -- A person of interest has been detained after a shooter opened fire on Brown University's campus Saturday, killing two people and injuring at least eight others.

The Providence Police Department announced that the person of interest had been detained in a brief statement shared to social media. Police said that a shelter-in-place order in the area around the university has been lifted.

The person of interest was taken into custody at 3:45 a.m. local time Sunday, law enforcement sources who spoke to ABC News said. The person was allegedly in possession of two guns when they were arrested.

The person was reportedly detained after a member of the public submitted a tip that led police to a Hampton Inn in the Rhode Island town of Coventry.
