The cafe/restaurant serving Trump loyalists in their thirties

Butterworth's, in Washington's Capitol Hill neighborhood, on December 4, 2025.

The United States of Donald Trump is not very vegetarian. At Butterworth's, customers can enjoy a strip steak or a lamb tartare, sometimes topped with crumbled foie gras. The wine pairings would make any sommelier wince, as the meals here are often washed down with syrupy cocktails. No matter. Every evening, those who flock to this cafe/restaurant in Washington's Capitol Hill neighborhood as offices empty come less for the food than to mingle with their own crowd: young Trump supporters. This has become a key meeting place for staffers working for Republican senators and representatives, some of whom have only just arrived from their home states, as well as lobbyists.

On this September evening, the average age inside barely reached 30. That said, the dress code was anything but casual. The men wore dark fitted suits and tight ties; American flags were pinned on their lapels and agency access badges hung from their necks. The women, meanwhile, wore short, bright dresses. Seated at the bar, one patron read The Federalist, a far-right online media outlet, on his phone. The snatches of conversation overheard contained praise for the National Guard troops that have been deployed in the federal capital's streets since August 12.
