Dec. 12 (UPI) -- North Carolina football coach Bill Belichick fired offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens and special teams coordinator Mike Priefer, he announced Friday.

"We want to thank coach Kitchens and coach Priefer for their commitment and many contributions to our program and student-athletes," Belichick said in a statement. "We wish them both nothing but the best in their future endeavors."

Belichick's Tar Heels went 4-8 in his first season. The Tar Heels ranked 121 out of 136 Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in points per game this season. They posted the No. 107 passing offense and No. 22 running game in the nation.

The Tar Heels' 288.8 yards per game were the sixth fewest among FBS teams.

Belichick, known for his defensive prowess and status as arguably the greatest coach in NFL history, teamed up with defensive coordinator -- and son -- Steve Belichick -- to coach a Tar Heels defense that allowed the 39th fewest points per game.
