SEOUL, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- South Korea's display industry was once among the country's most competitive sectors in 2025, along with semiconductors and automotive products. In recent years, however, it has struggled amid intensifying competition from Chinese companies.

In particular, the nation's two business bellwethers -- LG Display and Samsung Display Co. -- have faced distinct challenges. The former has grappled with profitability issues, while the latter has been weighed down by declining sales.

LG Display's revenue surpassed $20 billion in 2021, generating an operating profit of about $1.5 billion. Over the following three years, its revenue declined, resulting in cumulative deficits that exceed $3.5 billion.

This year, the situation has improved, as the firm chalked up a profit of $293 million during the first nine months. It is expected to achieve full-year profitability for the first time in four years.

"Despite several years of external uncertainty and volatility, we have continued to improve our business performance by beefing up execution of our strategic initiatives," LG Display CFO Kim Sung-hyun said after announcing the company's third-quarter results in late October.
