Two Georgia men have been sentenced for participating in a scheme to defraud the Georgia Department of Labor (GaDOL) of tens of millions of dollars in benefits intended to help unemployed individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Malcolm Jeffrey (a/k/a Malcolm Jeffery), 34, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay $16,958,372 in restitution. Gerard Towns (a/k/a Nolove Shine), 34, was sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to pay $365,066 in restitution.

Unemployment insurance (UI) is a joint state and federal program that provides benefits to eligible beneficiaries. UI benefits are intended to provide temporary financial assistance to workers who are unemployed through no fault of their own.
