arijuana policy reform is imminent, cannabis industry and Washington insiders say. According to a report in the Washington Post, President Donald Trump is seriously considering reclassifying marijuana from Schedule I drug to Schedule III, on par with mild painkillers. If cannabis is rescheduled, it will mark the greatest change to U.S. drug laws since 1970 and usher in a new future for the $32 billion state-regulated cannabis industry across 40 states.
According to The Post’s report on Thursday night, President Trump had a phone call with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), who is opposed to rescheduling, while cannabis industry executives, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services chief Mehmet Oz were in his office. The two sides pitched their differing opinions on the issue.
