Congressman Rips Into Kristi Noem For Sending ICE After Veterans And Their Family MembersRep. Seth Magaziner (D-R.I.) managed to secure a verbal pledge from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem during Thursday’s House Committee on Homeland Security hearing to, at the very least, take a look at certain individual immigrants’ cases of alleged mistreatment amid the Trump administration’s anti-immigration crackdown. All three have connections to the U.S. military, which Magaziner contrasted with Noem’s repeated claims that her department is only deporting “the worst of the worst.”The congressman began by asking Noem how many veterans she has deported. She denied having done so. He then introduced Noem to a combat veteran, Sae Joon Park, who took two bullets during his service and appeared at the hearing by Zoom from Korea.“Like many veterans, he struggled with PTSD and substance abuse after his service. He was arrested in the 1990s for some minor drug offenses, nothing serious; he never hurt anyone besides himself. He’s been clean and sober for 14 years,” Magaziner said.A second individual, currently in ICE detention, was described as the Irish-born wife of a veteran who was present at the hearing. A third individual caught up in ICE detentions had raised three U.S. Marines, one of whom was also present. With each veteran, Magaziner asked Noem to thank them for their service. She did so and affirmed that she would look at their individual cases.“Madame Secretary, you promised America that you would go after the worst of the worst. But these people are not the worst of the worst: a Purple Heart recipient, a military spouse, the father of three Marines,” Magaziner said.“There are many problems with your leadership, but the biggest problem is this: You don’t seem to know how to tell the difference between the good guys and the bad guys. Go after the bad guys, go after the terrorists, do not go after veterans, marines, children, United States citizens.”See All UpdatesClose
