Romanian President Nicusor Dan at the presidential palace in Bucharest, December 5, 2025. ANDREI PUNGOVSCHI FOR LE MONDE
Elected president of Romania in May, centrist Nicusor Dan, 55, made his first official visit to France on Tuesday, December 9. He knows the country well, having studied mathematics there in the 1990s.
The United States published a report on Friday criticizing the European Union (EU). Do you still see them as our allies?
The new strategy confirms several trends that had already been anticipated: The United States is intensifying its strategic focus on the Indo-Pacific region and expects European states to take on a greater role in ensuring security on our continent.
As for Romania, we have taken the commitments made at The Hague [at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in June] very seriously and are dedicating substantial resources to defense and security, in full alignment with our responsibilities as an ally. It is true that the document also includes critical positions toward Europe, at times reflecting ideological differences. Nonetheless, I am fully convinced that the strategic partnership between Romania and the US remains a fundamental anchor for regional stability.
