This singular equation aims to capture, in a mathematical formula, the wealth generated by drug trafficking. It's a calculation where the value of "D" is sought. "D" stands for the total amount users spend on illicit drugs over a year, taking into account variables such as price, quantity, number of users and frequency of use.

The study, titled "Size of Illicit Drug Markets in France (2010-2023)", published Monday, December 8, by the French Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (OFDT), estimates "D" at €6.8 billion. The turnover of France's illicit drug market has tripled since 2010.

Back then, cannabis was the best-selling illicit drug in France. With €3.1 billion for cocaine compared to €2.7 billion for cannabis, this is the first time cocaine has claimed the country's top spot among illicit drug markets.
