Trump Makes Unlikely Claim About ‘TINY CARS’ Coming To U.S.President Donald Trump appears excited about the idea of automakers selling smaller cars in the U.S., declaring in a Truth Social post this morning that he has “just approved TINY CARS to be built in America.”He added: “They can be propelled by gasoline, electric, or hybrid. These cars of the very near future are inexpensive, safe, fuel efficient and, quite simply, AMAZING!!! START BUILDING THEM NOW!”Trump mentioned the cars earlier in the week during a press event in which he was surrounded by U.S. auto executives, none of whom contradicted him. He apparently thought the cars were “cute” during his recent visit to Japan and other parts of Asia.No regulations have actually been changed, The Detroit Free Press noted.Nothing is specifically prohibiting automakers from making smaller cars except for safety standards and the lack of a big market for tiny cars in the U.S., where roads are wider and parking more abundant than in Japan. It is generally more profitable for automakers to build larger cars, and the vehicles on American roads have indeed gotten bigger in recent years. In part, that is due to a loophole in federal emissions regulations, which Trump loosened further this week.See All UpdatesClose
