he American company Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, announced that it has signed a partnership agreement focused on artificial intelligence (AI) with several international media organizations, including Groupe Le Monde (for three of its publications: Le Monde, Télérama and the Huffington Post) and Le Nouvel Observateur (commonly known as Le Nouvel Obs).
This lengthy negotiation, launched at the start of 2025, recently resulted in a multi-year agreement, following the same approach as the deal signed in March 2024 between Le Monde and OpenAI (the company operating ChatGPT). This new agreement extends the number of titles covered beyond the Société Éditrice du Monde (Le Monde's holding company), which already signed multi-year agreements with OpenAI and Perplexity, two major players in the sector. The agreement, significant both in terms of revenue and duration, will govern the use and presence of content from the various publications in the AI services developed by Meta – whether for training and improving these generative AI models (input), or for using the content as references or for providing context in responses (output).
Our strategy with Meta mirrored the approach we took in 2024 during our discussions with OpenAI: to protect our rights, have the value of our content recognized, strictly regulate its use and fulfill our role by providing authoritative information to growing numbers of people turning to these services for news.
