Secretary of State Marco Rubio found himself on the other end of relentless social media ridicule after making a dubious claim about President Donald Trump.
On Wednesday, the State Department renamed the former Institute of Peace to the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace in order to, as the department phrased on social media, “reflect the greatest dealmaker in our nation’s history.”
The Secretary of State promoted the name change on his own account, where he fanboyed out on the president by claiming ― dubiously, as we said up above — that “President Trump will be remembered by history as the President of Peace,” and that “it’s time our State Department display that.”
Rubio is, of course, entitled to his opinion, be it truly sincere or to curry favor with a notoriously mercurial boss.
However, many people on social media thought Rubio’s post sounded more like a “cult alert,” especially considering Trump ― the so-called “President of Peace” ― recently renamed the Department of Defense as the “Department of War.”
