A 65-year-old retired BMTC bus driver, distressed over his wife’s prolonged illness, allegedly strangled her to death before ending his life at their home in Subramanyapura on Tuesday.
The deceased have been identified as Baby, 65, and her husband was identified as Venkateshan. The couple lived with their son, Anil Kumar, at 3rd Cross, Chikkagoudanapalya.
According to police, the incident came to light around 12.45 p.m. when Anil’s wife returned home from school with their child. She found Venkateshan hanging from a ceiling fan with a plastic rope, while Baby was discovered unconscious on her wheelchair. She was later declared dead.
The family members told police that Baby suffered a stroke five years ago, leaving her paralysed and unable to speak. She relied on a wheelchair for mobility. The prolonged caregiving had reportedly taken an emotional toll on Venkateshan, who would often express his distress and had allegedly said at home that he would kill his wife and kill himself, as he could not bear to see her in that state.
The police suspect that taking advantage of the time when no one was home, Venkateshan strangled Baby with a plastic rope and then used the same rope to hang himself.
