Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Former European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini was arrested as part of a wider investigation into misuse of EU funds after raids on bodies she heads up, or had previously led.
European Public Prosecutor's Office, which carried out searches of the College of Europe in Bruges and the EU foreign affairs bureau in Brussels on Tuesday, which Mogherini led 2014-2019, said the probe related funds for training diplomats.
The prosecutor's office said a senior college staff member and a senior official from the European Commission were questioned by police, informed of the allegations against them and released, along with Mogherini. The homes of all three were also searched, but it was unclear if they were charged.
"The accusations concern procurement fraud and corruption, conflict of interest and violation of professional secrecy," EPPO said.
