Amina AlTai doesn’t agree with the adage “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

Many people believe that if they pursue their passion, “everything else will fall into place—our relationships, our finances, our well-being, and our happiness,” she writes in her recent book “The Ambition Trap.”

In reality, it takes more than passion to build a sustainable career, according to AlTai, a leadership coach who works with Fortune 100 leaders, Olympians and “everyone in between.”

For one, “passion by nature is fickle,” AlTai tells CNBC Make It: “It’s meant to change a lot in our lifetimes.”

For example, AlTai says she was inspired to pursue a master’s degree in nutrition after facing a health crisis in her late 20s.
