SEOUL, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- As the trial of Unification Church leader, Hak Ja Han, opened in Seoul, South Korean president Lee Jae-myung ordered a review of the constitutionality of the church's alleged political entanglements.
Han is charged with bribery and graft for allegedly seeking influence with public officials and the wife of former President Yoon Seok-yul through illicit gifts and cash donations.
The first session in Han's trial, on Monday, featured some damaging testimony. In a speech delivered by Han at the Japan Summit and Leadership Conference 2019 in Nagoya she is quoted as saying:
"Politics and religion must become one. Today's politicians must be people who can listen to the voice of Heaven with a humble attitude. ... I desire to announce an organization that can rapidly make the leadership of this nation a New Japan serving the Heavenly Parents, enabling South Korea and the United States to become one and vigorously open the era of the Asia-Pacific civilization sphere."
