Italy's Audit Court on Thursday explained its recent No to the government's project to build what would be the world's longest suspension bridge across the Messina Strait linking Sicily to mainland Italy.
Violation of the natural habitat, contractual changes, and the failure of the Regional Authority to provide an opinion on the tariff plan are the main reasons for the rejection of the Strait of Messina Bridge, as disclosed by the Court of Auditors.
Specifically: violation of Directive 92/43/EC on the conservation of natural and semi-natural habitats, due to the lack of investigation and reasoning in the so-called Iropi resolution; violation of Article 72 of Directive 2014/24/EU, given the substantial, objective and subjective changes that occurred in the original contractual relationship; and failure to obtain the opinion of the Transport Regulatory Authority regarding the tariff plan underlying the economic and financial plan.
Italy's Audit Court on November 17 ruled illegitimate a third, additional clause regulating the construction of the bridge across the Messina Strait between Sicily and mainland Italy after last month ruling out the first two clauses and pausing the long-awaited project.
