Early last year we featured the Cine 1, Leica’s first projector in nearly a century. It comes in two variants, projecting at precisely 100in or 120in, and new owners may have wondered how an accompanying 100in or 120in screen could be installed in a living space in a way that’s both subtle and elegant. The answer comes courtesy of Swiss furniture manufacturer USM, which has collaborated with Leica to create multimedia units designed specifically for the Cine 1.
Press a single button on the Cine 1’s remote and an unpretentious sideboard is transformed; a black, high-contrast screen unrolls and rises from the rear, while the projector’s motorised cover opens and its shelf slides out to create the perfect short throw distance. Then, when you’ve finished watching Tarkovsky’s Solaris (or whatever your bag might be), another button press puts everything back just the way it was. A large blank rectangle need not be the focus of the room, and the wall behind it need not be dead space. Alternatively, you could opt for a freestanding screen in the middle of a room, dividing it into two when in use, then quietly disappearing from view.
