Nov. 26 (UPI) -- At least 13 people in Hong Kong were killed and 15 were injured after fire engulfed seven high-rise buildings in a housing development in the New Territories on Wednesday. More than 750 firefighters were battling the flames.

One of the dead was a 37-year-old firefighter, part of a company from nearby Sha Tin who were among the first on the scene after the blaze erupted just before 3 p.m. local time at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, 12 miles north of downtown Hong Kong.

Authorities told a news conference that 15 people had been injured. Earlier reports said of the nine people taken to two area hospitals, four were dead, three were in a critical condition, one was in a serious condition and one was "stable."

Former district councilman Herman Yiu Kwan-ho told the South Morning China Post that eight seniors and two babies were among 13 people who remained trapped in the complex, comprising almost 2,000 flats in eight buildings that are home to 4,000 people.
