Louisiana's top health official, who sought to put the brakes on a vaccination campaign during a 2024 flu outbreak, has been named principal deputy director at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), according to multiple reports.

A Department of Health and Human Services confirmed the appointment of Louisiana Surgeon General Ralph Abraham, NBC News and the Washington Post reported reporting.

Abraham, who ordered his health department to stop promoting mass vaccinations during an unptick in influenza cases last winter, will work under Jim O'Neill, the CDC's acting director.
