LOS ANGELES, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- The first Zootopia, released in 2016, boasted sophisticated animation in depicting the adaptation of various animals to city life. Zootopia 2, in theaters Wednesday, uses that foundation for another fun animal mystery, if not quite as profound.
Ginnifer Goodwin returns to voice Judy Hopps, the first rabbit to join the Zootopia police, who is now partnered with fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman). The film amusingly calls out how their different personalities fit Hollywood's mismatched partner dynamic.
Judy is an overachiever who investigates cases against orders, and Nick is the sarcastic, laid back comic relief. When the first snake in 100 years appears in Zootopia, Nick and Judy uncover a new conspiracy.
After a comical bit of slapstick incriminates Nick and Judy in a snake attack, the pair have to clear their names with the Zootopia PD on their tails, another classic trope of cop movies.
The size disparity is still on display in the visuals of Zootopia. Even a rabbit and fox are small within a police force that includes zebras, hippos, and buffalo. Other mismatched pairs of partners provide witty commentary on buddy cop dynamics.
