Nearly four months after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and United States President Donald Trump signed a trade deal, the US continues to pressure the European Union (EU) for further concessions. On Monday, November 24, at a meeting of the trade ministers of the 27 member states in Brussels, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and trade representative Jamieson Greer traveled to the Belgian capital to voice their grievances.

European Commission launches digital regulation simplification

The White House, in particular, expects the Europeans to relax their digital regulations, under which several investigations are underway against Apple, Google, X and Meta. These regulations, such as EU competition law, recently led to a €3 billion fine for Google. Only under this condition, it argues, will Washington reconsider the 50% tariffs currently applied to steel and aluminum imports, as well as to related products such as machines and robots containing those metals.
