Nov. 24 (UPI) -- A series of Russian spy ships have been trailed by the British military over the last week near its shores in the English Channel.

The British Royal Navy intercepted two Russian warships in the English Channel as it sailed west through the Dover Strait, Britain's Ministry of Defense said Monday.

HMS Severn covered RFN Stoikiy, a corvette, and the tanker Yelnya in a "round-the-clock shadowing operation" for about two weeks.

Monitoring duties then were passed off to a NATO lay off the coast of northwest France near Brittany.

Always ready, always watching#RoyalNavy warships @hmssevern and @HMSSomerset carried out two interceptions in a fortnight of Russian vessels in waters near the UK, watching every move and operating closely with #NATO allies to protect our waterways.
