Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has just gotten the most nominations in Game Awards history, and is far and away a clear frontrunner to bring a lot of them home, plus land GOTY itself. This has sparked a debate between people who think it’s overrated and those who think it’s one of their favorite games of all time. But there’s a third class, people who haven’t played it and are starting now, based on all the praise it’s getting.
Back at Expedition 33’s launch, I wrote an advice article that I thought I would reprise here for all the new Expeditioners out there. It’ll be an abridged version of past tips, where, despite a bunch of patches, you can still employ to this day. I will not include any spoilers in this, even though there are some pieces of advice that would go there. I won’t, however. So, here are ten things I wish I knew when I started Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
1) Dodging and Parrying – These are the two fundamentals of defensive combat in the game, the “real-time” aspect that has you work on your timing. Dodging has a larger window but will not allow you to strike back like Parrying. I got through the entire game by dodging and almost never parrying, which may have dragged out some fights, but if you can’t get the timing down, it’s a perfectly fine way to play.
