Every day, the Transportation Security Administration screens around 3.3 million carry-on bags to ensure no dangerous items could impact air passengers' safety.
For travelers, this means following the rules put in place to keep security checkpoint lines moving along. By now, most travelers are aware of the longstanding TSA rules prohibiting liquids over 3.4-ounces and any weapon-like items into their carry-on baggage. (The agency banned three items, including cordless hair tools, in checked luggage, in Aug. 2025 but also recently scrapped the shoes-off policy.)
Still, getting flagged at security can make even the most seasoned traveler break a sweat, especially given that the list of items not allowed on planes is extensive.
"Airport security can be stressful, especially when you’re carrying items you didn’t realize were restricted," Paul Stewart, travel expert and founder of My Baggage, told USA TODAY.
