Former Member of Parliament and president of Puducherry Maanila Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam M. Ramadass has requested the territorial administration to reconsider the selection process prescribed for the recruitment of 226 Nursing Officers in the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute.

In a statement, he said the prescribed qualification, selection process and the authority of selection could result in manipulation of the recruitment process. If the selection process gives any room for manipulation, the consequent result will be selection of mediocre staff for such a crucial post at the medical college.

The proposal of the institution to consider five years of continuous residence would open the doors of selection to the students who migrated to Puducherry six to seven years ago for the purpose of education and employment. The recruitment should be restricted to those who were born and had studied from first standard to diploma/degree courses at institutions in the Union Territory, he said.

The selection process indicated is contrary to the current mode of recruitment in Jipmer and other institutions of national importance. While the scores assigned to seniority in Employment Exchange registration and service during Covid-19 could be in order, the decision to give weightage of 100 marks to academic performance in Plus 2, diploma/degree in nursing was unacceptable. Marks vary under different boards and among those studying in private and government institutions. Semester and non-semester systems of evaluation cause variation in marks. Marks obtained at different points of time also differ because of differences in syllabus and curricula, method of teaching and examination, he said.
