Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) joint secretary Deepika Jha was suspended by the university administration from the students’ union for two months after an internal inquiry found her guilty of physically assaulting Professor Sujit Kumar inside the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar College last month. However, several teachers, including the aggrieved academic, termed the action an “eyewash” and “insufficient”, arguing that the action overlaps with the upcoming lean academic period, including the winter break.

A purported video from the incident showed the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad leader slapping the professor.

The order by the office of the Proctor, dated November 14, stated that Ms. Jha’s conduct was “unacceptable and unbecoming on the part of a student and an office-bearer of DUSU”.

While allowing her to attend classes and appear for examinations, the administration barred her from entering DU colleges for union-related work. “Her suspension shall be revoked after a review of her conduct by the Disciplinary Committee,” it added.

Ms. Jha told The Hindu that she had not yet received any communication from DU.
