In a turn of events, President Trump says he now has plans to meet with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani (D) in Washington, D.C.“The mayor of New York, I will say, would like to meet with us and we’ll work something out,” Trump told reporters Sunday night, seemingly referring to Mamdani and not current Mayor Eric Adams (D). “But he would like to come to Washington and meet, and we’ll work something out,” Trump added. “We want to see everything work out well for New York.”Mamdani beat out former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and Republican Curtis Sliwa in the New York City mayoral election earlier this month. Trump’s announcement came after he and Mamdani had publicly butted heads. The president, who endorsed his ex-foe Cuomo in the New York mayoral race, repeatedly falsely referred to Mamdani as a “communist.” Mamdani has denied being a communist. In September, Trump threatened to withhold funding from New York City should the self-proclaimed democratic socialist win the race. Trump, a New York native, also vowed that Mamdani would face “problems with Washington like no Mayor in the history of our once great City.”President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani have been embroiled in a war of words over policy issues like immigration and federal funding.Getty Images/XMamdani took aim at Trump during his victory speech at the Paramount Theater on Nov. 4, declaring, “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up.” He also called Trump a “despot” who has “betrayed” the nation in his deliverance. A source told The Hill that Trump did not reach out to Mamdani in the hours following his win. Speaking with Fox News the day after the election, Trump revealed that he apparently didn’t take Mamdani’s shots lightly. Deeming Mamdani’s speech “very angry,” Trump told the outlet, “I think he should be nice to me. I’m sort of the one that has to approve a lot of things coming to him, so he’s off to a bad start.”Noting that it’s a “very dangerous statement for him to make,” the president added, “He has to be a little bit respectful of Washington, because if he’s not, he doesn’t have a chance of succeeding. And I want to make him succeed.”Trump then clarified, “I want to make the city succeed, I don’t want to make him succeed.”Close
