Amidst the furore over the release in the United States of emails of convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s links with U.S. President Donald Trump, one of the 11-year-old mails released by the U.S. Oversight House Committee on Wednesday (November 12, 2025) set off public exchanges on social media between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress party in India as well.

The mail appeared to reference an invitation to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri by Epstein on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly and Climate Summit on September 19, 2014, which was dismissed by the BJP as “bogus claims” and “random name-dropping” in response to questions from Congress spokespersons.

U.S. House Democrats release Epstein schedules showing plans to meet Elon Musk, Peter Thiel

The emails, between Epstein, who died in jail in 2019, and former White House Counsel Kathy Ruemmler, are incomplete, but appear to recount Epstein demanding Ms. Ruemmler’s assistance in contacting her former “boss”, indicating then U.S. President Barack Obama, who would have travelled to New York to attend UNGA-related events.

In the emails provided by the Democrat oversight committee that accused the U.S. White House of a “cover-up” on Epstein’s relationship with Mr. Trump, Epstein is seen to be listing several international celebrities coming to events hosted by him that week.
