In another major win for progressives, community organizer Katie Wilson is on track to defeat incumbent Mayor Bruce Harrell in Seattle’s mayoral race.
Harrell, a moderate and former City Council member, said he conceded to Wilson on Thursday as election returns showed her pulling ahead in the closely contested face off.
“I just spoke to mayor-elect Katie Wilson to congratulate her on a hard-fought victory,” Harrell told reporters. “I let her know my team is standing by [for transition]. It was a very delightful conversation.”
As of the latest King County election results update on Thursday, Wilson had won about 50.2% of the vote, while Harrell had secured 49.5%.
Wilson’s win marks a significant victory for progressives both in the city, and nationally. In Seattle, progressive candidates also unseated an incumbent city attorney and secured multiple city council seats as they championed less punitive approaches to crime and homelessness.
