Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Travelers on Wednesday continued to experience flight cancellations and delays amid air traffic control shortages during the federal government shutdown.

The numbers are the lowest since the Federal Aviation Administration mandated cuts on Friday at 40 high-traffic airports, but airlines have been pre-emptively cancelling flights, which are not counted in the daily statistics.

Wednesday was the second day of mandated 6% cancellations. On Thursday, the percentage is scheduled to rise to 8%, six days after 4% reduction was first required.

As of 7 p.m. EST Wednesday, 1,367 flights within the U.S. had been canceled and 1,946 were delayed, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.
