A special investigation team led by Munnar Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy.SP) S. Chandrakumar on Wednesday arrested two Tamil Nadu natives for stealing a Panchaloha idol from a temple in the Marayur police station limit in the district.
The arrested are Velankanni, 50, of Maniyankaranpetty, and Kumareshan, 43, of Uthamapalayam in Tamil Nadu. According to officials, the centuries-old idol was stolen from the Kaliyamman temple under the Vaguvarai estate division near Maryur on the night of November 6. The temple is situated in an isolated place, and the accused broke the doors and stole the idol. After the incident, Idukki District Police Chief K.M. Sabu Mathew formed a special team for the probe.
“ The police received information that one of the accused had reached Poopara in Idukki. The team arrested the first accused from Poopara and the second accused from Bodinayakannur. The idol was also recovered,” said Mr. Chandrakumar.
