BEIRUT, Lebanon, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Ahmed Sharaa, the first Syrian leader to visit the White House and a head of state who met U.S. President Donald Trump three times in six months, has steadily gained international recognition and support.
Yet, his greatest challenges remain at home -- a test that will ultimately define his success, political analysts say.
The Trump-Sharaa closed meeting Monday marked a turning point and another significant step in rebuilding U.S.-Syrian relations, which has experienced more downs than ups during the decades-long rule of the Assad family.
By describing Sharaa as "a strong leader" and justifying his controversial "rough past," Trump gave him a boost of confidence and promised to do everything Washington can to help make Syria successful.
