“Daily Show” host Jon Stewart was fuming on Monday after eight Democratic senators capitulated to President Donald Trump to end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. In return, they got none of their demands ― especially the extension of the Affordable Care Act credits that are set to expire at the end of the year. “I can’t fucking believe it!” Stewart said multiple times throughout a nearly 22-minute monologue in which he ultimately suggested the best solution now is to replace Democratic leaders such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.). Stewart played a supercut video of Democratic figures swearing they will “not stop fighting” and “will not back down.” Schumer himself insisted “no fucking way” they would surrender. “Well, funny fucking story,” Stewart said. “They fucking caved on the shutdown, not even a full week removed from the best election-night results they’ve had in years.” Democrats last week won nearly every major election contest across the nation, often by much higher-than-expected margins. But Democrats caved without getting the ACA subsidies they were holding out for, instead settling for a promise by Republicans to hold a separate vote on the subject next month. “I can’t fucking believe it!” Stewart said again, then schooled lawmakers on exactly how that vote will ultimately fail. “Democrats, you sold out the entire shutdown not to get what you wanted, but for a promise to not get what you wanted later,” he said.
