CNN’s Erica Hill took a slight dig at President Donald Trump Friday night for taking off to Florida for the weekend amid a historically long government shutdown that has left Americans reeling. “Tonight, for the first time, many Americans find themselves feeling the effects of the longest government shutdown on record,” guest anchor Hill said on “The Source with Kaitlan Collins,” at Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Virginia. “So just try to wrap your head around this. The House has been in session for just 20 days over the course of the last five months,” Hill said. “Meantime, earlier at the White House, before jetting off to Florida, the president continued to insist that despite what you see when you go to the store, or maybe when you pay a bill, he says, things are getting cheaper.”Air travelers are feeling anxious after thousands of flights were cut, largely due to the shutdown delaying air traffic controllers’ paychecks. Among others impacted are Americans who rely on SNAP food benefits, but now expect their November payments to be partial or delayed due to Congress’s failure to appropriate funds. In a late-night decision on Friday, the Supreme Court granted the Trump administration’s emergency appeal to temporarily block a court order to fund SNAP food aid payments fully. However, as the shutdown now reaches day 38, Republicans quickly rejected Democrats’ offer to end it Friday, with Trump demanding Senate Republicans to stay in Washington, D.C., until a deal is made. The president launched an attack at Democrats on his Truth Social platform Saturday morning, accusing them of “destroying our great, miracle economy” while on his golf trip in West Palm Beach, Mediaite reports.Close
