A pattern in Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’Union (JNUSU) elections over the years is that the Left has its stronghold in Arts and Humanities schools, while the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) garners its votes from the Science schools. Although the pattern re-emerged this year, student leaders say it is not as pronounced as it used to be.

The Left Unity, an alliance of the All India Students’ Association (AISA), Students’Federation of India (SFI), and Democratic Students’Federation (DSF), scripted victory in all four central panel posts – president, vice president, general secretary, and joint secretary – in the polls that concludedon Thursday.

The Left performed well across the Arts schools, with the ABVP trailing in all but the Science schools, where they took the lead in three out of four central panel posts. However, this was not enough to alter the outcome.

Left Unity’sAditi Mishra, who won the presidential post, got 1,937 votes out of a total of 5,802 votes. She was ahead of her counterpart, ABVP’sVikas Patel, in the School of Social Sciences (SSS) and in the School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies (SLL&CS) by 191 and 266 votes respectively. However, Mr. Patel was ahead by 135 votesin the combined Science schools and the School of Engineering.
