When Sean Hannity has to step in to be the voice of reason, it may be an indication that you’re being a bit of a drama queen.Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) went on an alarmist tirade against Democrats while delivering a gloomy assessment on the future of the Republican party during an appearance on Fox News Tuesday.Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show Wednesday.Screenshot Fox News via SnapstreamCruz’s over-the-top remarks were prompted after host Hannity asked him what he thought of Democrats sweeping key races during several states’ local elections Tuesday — which notably included Zohran Mamdani’s win to become the next mayor of New York City. “Look, last night was a disaster,” Cruz said flatly. “It was an electoral blowout. The results in New Jersey were disastrous. The results in Virginia were terrible. The results in New York — Comrade Mamdani is the face of the Democrat party,” Cruz said, referring to Mamdani who identifies as a democratic socialist.“We have an actual communist jihadist,” Cruz continued, echoing a right-wing and Islamophobic talking point used to stoke fear about Mamdani’s Muslim faith. “It is important to note that Mamdani is not a socialist. He is a full-on communist... That is profoundly dangerous.”Cruz added that Mamdani was a “lunatic,” and under his leadership, “we are going to see New Yorkers die.”Shortly after Cruz attempted to link Mamdani to the 9-11 attacks, Hannity stepped in — for the first time — to pull him off the edge.“DId you expect any different result?” Hannity asked. “Because I didn’t.”This temporarily calmed Cruz down. But he got worked up again towards the end of his appearance, while saying that the Democratic wins on Tuesday night should act as a wake-up call for the GOP.“Last night should be a warning sign. It should be a warning sign to Republicans across this country,” Cruz said. “The left, they’re energized. They’re angry. Democrats are outraising Republicans right now, three to one, four to one. It is dangerous.” He warned that “complacency” by centrists could turn into a full-on catastrophe for the right. The left showed up in big numbers last night, and common-sense conservatives did not. If that happens a year from now, we face disaster in the midterms,” he concluded.“OK, uh, OK,” Hannity said. “I don’t feel as dire as you do.”Hannity went on to say that Republicans’ losses Tuesday should act as a “cautionary tale” and advocated for “introspection” and “course correction” on the right moving on.Although Hannity acted like the adult in the room while Cruz had his fear-mongering temper tantrum, he hasn’t been completely free of dramatics in the wake of Tuesday’s elections.The Fox News host said Tuesday that his friends in New York are reeling after Mamdani’s win.“I honestly feel bad,” Hannity said. “I have friends of mine in New York. My phone is blowing up. They are officially depressed and scared.”
