Inclusion of older people in society is a significant institutional challenge, President Sergio Mattarella said Thursday.

"It is essential that all the institutions of the Republic be aware of the choices that must be made with regard to a group of citizens that exceeds 14 million people, 4 million of whom—as we have heard—are unfortunately not self-sufficient," he told a delegation of the National Union of Social Welfare Institutions and Initiatives (UNEBA).

"The adequate inclusion of older people, often single-parent families, is one of the most significant challenges for a society that recognizes that they are not passive beneficiaries but rather drivers of knowledge and experience, rather than decisive contributors to the progress of communities."
