MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell delivered a scathing “Last Word” monologue Wednesday after Democrats swept key races in this week’s various elections, arguing that the Republican wipeout has left President Donald Trump “living in fear” of the 2026 midterms.“The election returns last night indicated that a year from now, Democrats will win back control of the House of Representatives,” said O’Donnell, arguing this means “most of the Trump madness can be stopped in its tracks — and Donald Trump knows that.”While the Democratic victories Tuesday are complicating bipartisan talks to reopen the federal government amid an ongoing shutdown, they revealed opposition to Trump’s policies and preferred candidates in New York City, New Jersey, Virginia and California.Former State Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist who excoriated the president in his victory speech, won New York City’s mayoral race against disgraced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) — whom Trump had publicly endorsed a day prior.Former Reps. Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.) and Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) respectively won the governorships of New Jersey and Virginia, meanwhile, and Californians voted “yes” on Proposition 50 — which will allow state legislators to redistrict ahead of the midterms.O’Donnell joined untold critics in mocking Trump’s claim that the Republican candidates only lost because “TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT,” noting that even the conservative Wall Street Journal’s editorial board disagreed and argued that he symbolically was.The paper also warned that if Trump actually believes this, “the GOP is heading for bigger problems in 2026.” O’Donnell echoed as much on his show and said, “Donald Trump is living in fear tonight of just how bad election night is going to be for him next year.”The pundit argued Trump “and his incompetent Cabinet members” might actually become subject to serious legal investigations into their alleged “personal profiteering from government” and “possible abuse of their office” should Democrats regain control.Tuesday’s results certainly suggest the backlash to Trump is already here, and while the midterms have yet to show how big it is, O’Donnell argued that even the U.S. Supreme Court “humiliated” Trump this week by skeptically discussing his authority to impose tariffs.Neal Katyal, a lawyer representing the companies suing the Trump administration over his tariffs, stated plainly Wednesday in his opening remarks to the court, “Tariffs are taxes. They take dollars from Americans’ pockets and deposit them in the U.S. Treasury.”O’Donnell, who previously decried the unconstitutional policy on his show, was delighted.“‘Tariffs are taxes’ is the single shortest sentence that exposes the lie of the Trump tariffs, which Donald Trump has claimed are paid by foreign countries,” he said. “Donald Trump’s lawyer, the solicitor general, didn’t dare try to tell that lie to the Supreme Court today.”Watch the full monologue below:Close
