US officials plan to reduce the number of flights at 40 of the country's busiest airports as part of measures to ease pressure on air traffic controllers.

US control towers are experiencing absences as air traffic controllers call in sick because they are working without pay.

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers are not receiving pay cheques because lawmakers have not been able to pass a budget. On Wednesday, the federal government funding impasse became the longest shutdown in US history.

The Federal Aviation Administration has not formally announced which airports will have their capacity cut, but here is the full list, according to US media. International flights would face no cuts.
