Two people in intensive care and a driver arrested after incident on Île d’Oléron on Wednesday, say authorities
A driver rammed into pedestrians and cyclists on France’s tourist-frequented Île d’Oléron off the Atlantic coast on Wednesday, injuring several people including four seriously, authorities said.
The 35-year-old driver was arrested by police and an investigation has been opened, the interior minister, Laurent Nuñez, said in a post on X.
The man, a resident of the island, had “deliberately hit several pedestrians and cyclists” along a main road, prosecutor Arnaud Laraize said.
About nine people in total had been injured, the mayor for Dolus-d’Oléron, Thibault Brechkoff, told BFM TV, while Laraize put the total number of injured at 10. France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office has not been put in charge of the inquiry, local media reported. The prosecutor’s office could not immediately be reached for comment.
