The rebellion has started to look like a genuine generational war. Progressive youth organizations in the United States have become increasingly critical of Democratic Party leaders and are determined to make their voices heard. At the heart of their frustration is the party's tendency to always prioritize experience – or, depending on one's perspective, advanced age – when selecting candidates.
The latest battleground is in Maine, where, in mid-October, the six main Democratic youth organizations took on the party leadership. They issued a statement of support for Graham Platner, 41, a left-wing populist and candidate for the 2026 Senate election, on the very same day Janet Mills launched her candidacy.
The state's governor, age 77, was favored by the Democratic establishment and especially by New York Senator and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, 74.
