President Donald Trump is making clear he has no desire to negotiate with Democrats to end the ongoing government shutdown, which is on track to become the longest such closure in U.S. history.

In an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes” broadcast on Sunday, Trump predicted Democrats will eventually capitulate to Republicans and vote to reopen the government.

“I think they have to,” he said. “And if they don’t vote, that’s their problem.”

His comments come as key elections, including the New York City mayoral race, the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races, and the special election in California, are set for Tuesday, marking the first test of his second term in office, as polls show he’s growing more unpopular.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court this week will hear arguments in a major case centered on whether Trump has the authority to impose sweeping tariffs under federal law.
