President Donald Trump has demolished the White House’s East Wing, startling historic preservationists and drawing national ire on his way to building what he says will be a new 8,400-square-metre (90,000-square-foot) ballroom.
The enormous new venue is funded by private donors, which has raised ethical concerns.
It's the first major structural change to the mansion since extensive renovations under President Truman in 1948.
Trump said during an event in the East Room on Oct. 20 that the ballroom construction work began earlier in the day.
