The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a key cybercrime accused, who was part of a syndicate that targeted Japanese citizens through “tech support scams”. The action has been taken as part of the ongoing ‘Operation Chakra-V’ against cybercriminals.

The agency has identified the accused as Dwibendu Moharana, who was intercepted at Bhubaneswar airport on his return to India on Thursday (October 30, 2025).

“Following coordinated searches conducted on May 28, 2025, at 19 locations across Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, which led to the arrest of six operatives, Moharana had absconded from Bhubaneswar to the United Arab Emirates on May 29, 2025, immediately after his call centre at Voip Connect Private Limited, Noida, was uncovered,” the agency said on Saturday.

Its investigations revealed that Mr. Moharana operated the illegal call centre that was involved in sophisticated social engineering and deception, according to the agency. His associates allegedly impersonated support personnel from multinational companies, and made their Japanese victims pay up under false pretences, the agency said.
