Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju, on Wednesday (October 29, 2025), termed Urdu “the most beautiful language in the world”. Speaking at the 105th foundation day of the Jamia Milia Islamia University, the Minister also stressed that harmony between Hindus and Muslims was vital for India’s progress and unity.

“I don’t know much of Urdu, but I can say that Urdu is the most beautiful language in the world,” the Minister said, while praising the songs being played at the varsity’s auditorium.

He added that among the six minorities, which included Christians, Muslims, Parsis, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists, the Muslims were the biggest minority. He added that the country could not develop without Hindu-Muslim harmony.

“Of the six recognised minorities, Muslims form about 80%.... It is the responsibility of the larger communities — the Hindus and the Muslims — to ensure harmony. If they live in peace, then all other smaller communities would also continue to contribute to the growth of the country. The Jamia Millia Islamia is the best symbol from where such a message can go out,” Mr. Rijiju said.
