Oct. 24 (UPI) -- A U-Haul truck driven by what police said was an "erratic driver" drew fire from police after it allegedly tried to ram the entrance of Coast Guard Base Alameda near Oakland, Calif., Thursday night.
At about 10 p.m. PST Thursday, "Coast Guard personnel issued multiple verbal commands to stop the vehicle, the driver failed to comply and proceeded to put the vehicle in reverse," the U.S. Coast Guard posted on X. "When the vehicle's actions posed a direct threat to the safety of Coast Guard and security personnel, law enforcement officers discharged several rounds of live fire."
Two people were injured in the incident. The driver of the truck was wounded in the stomach, and a bystander was struck by a fragment, the Department of Homeland Security said. The truck driver was taken for a mental health evaluation.
Neither injury was life-threatening, and no Coast Guard personnel were injured.
On Thursday, protesters blocked the bridge that leads to the base because President Donald Trump had sent agents there. He had planned to "surge" San Francisco with agents to fight crime, but he later canceled his plans.
