David Lammy said to be furious after Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, who was meant to go to an immigration detention centre to be deported, was accidentally freed
A man who sparked nationwide protests after sexually assaulting a woman and a 14-year-old girl near the asylum hotel in Epping where he was a resident has been accidentally released from jail.
The Ethiopian national Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, 38, was jailed for 12 months in September. He was meant to be sent to an immigration detention centre to be deported but was freed by mistake, it has emerged.
The deputy prime minister, David Lammy, was said to be furious and had ordered an investigation, a government source said.
Lammy was supporting police efforts to find Kebatu.
