With close to four million sq. ft. of Information Technology (IT) space said to be under development in Coimbatore, new IT jobs that will be generated by the potential occupants is expected to be high.

However, freshers who are looking for job opportunities need to be industry-ready and measures are needed to address the skill gap, say IT company owners here.

“There is a high demand for people as IT companies continue to hire. Since automation will have an increasing impact, the candidates should be able to add value to get jobs. There should be more re-skilling efforts,” says Prashanth Subramanian, former chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Coimbatore.

IT and ITeS companies setting shop in Coimbatore get employees not only from Coimbatore but from nearby towns such as Pollachi, Udumalpet, Dindigul, etc. These candidates ultimately migrate to Coimbatore with their families, says Aruna Thangaraj, convenor of the IT panel of the CII, Coimbatore Zone.
