Hundreds of thousands of furloughed federal workers are feeling the financial burden of the government shutdown now entering its fourth week — though President Donald Trump is working to secure paychecks for immigration enforcement agents deployed across the country.

The Trump administration has fired over 4,100 federal workers since the shutdown began on Oct. 1, the Justice Department said in a court filing. Hundreds of thousands more are going without pay. But according to a Department of Homeland Security memo, the Trump administration plans to keep paying law enforcement within the department.

The nation, meanwhile, is protesting the Trump administration. Nationwide “No Kings” protests drew millions to some 2,700 peaceful rallies across the country over the weekend, breaking records and drawing the ire of Trump administration officials.

Last week, Trump traveled to the Middle East to promote his role in a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the two-year Gaza war.

While the U.S. president told reporters the “war is over,” lasting peace will depend on a series of challenging decisions for Trump, while early cracks are already starting to emerge.
